Is Your Church Social   Part 14   Twitter – What’s a Twitter?

Social media, or Web 2.0, is all the rage. Since millions of people are flocking to the various social media, it’s a great opportunity for churches. We’ve been looking at the various forms of social media and how Church’s can use social media as part of their church marketing strategy and more importantly, use social media to share the message of Jesus Christ. My previous set of articles focused on the social networking site, Facebook. Today, I want to turn our focus to another social networking site, Twitter.

It’s a Blog. It’s a Facebook. No, It’s Twitter:

Twitter is currently the third most popular social networking site in the world. It’s kind of like a cross between Facebook and a blog. Instead of posting entire articles as you would in a blog, you post short messages, called “tweets”, that are 140 characters or less. Like Facebook, your messages get shared with all the people who are “following” you. Unlike Facebook, there are no ways to share pictures and videos, setup events, or personalize your Twitter homepage, like you can a Facebook Page. It’s all about the tweets.

Anytime – Anywhere:

One of the best aspects of Twitter is that it’s easy to use (not technical at all) and it’s able to be connected to your mobile phone. If you can text, you can twitter (though you can also tweet from your computer). So, unlike your blog, website, or even Facebook, you can tweet from anywhere. If you’re standing in line for a movie, you can tweet from there. If you’re in Paraguay on a mission trip, as long as you have cell service, you can tweet from there. If you’re in church listening to the sermon…well, maybe you should wait until after the sermon.

What’s The Point?

So, what can you do with a 140 character message? You won’t be writing an exposition on predestination or posting a sermon transcript. Twitter is self described as being about the everyday, the little things that you wouldn’t normally email someone about or blog about.

“Real life happens between blog posts and emails.”

On a personal level, Twitter helps you connect with people and get to know them better, by giving you a look into the everyday lives of the people you follow. It’s like adding details to a drawing. Even people that you see regularly have aspects of their lives that you probably are unaware of, whether it’s books they are reading, shows they watch, or concerns they have. Twitter helps people share those parts of their lives. That in and of itself could be beneficial for churches as it can help your congregation connect on a more personal level and help members of the congregation connect with non-members.

But there are more uses of Twitter for churches. From announcing upcoming events, to involving people in devotions, Twitter can be a useful tool for churches both in church marketing and in achieving the mission of your church. In the next few articles I’ll be talking a little more about Twitter and why your church should be Twittering.

Email marketing is a type of advertising and sales promotion on the internet that specifically uses the medium of the internet as opposed to banner ads and other promotional material on the internet. So we can see that the difference between the two lies in the fact that one is a venture with purely business and revenue-based objectives in mind while the other is a pure social interaction. There are, of course, ways of making this work from a business perspective but this requires a high degree of brand recall as well as a high degree of marketing and advertising expertise.

The practice of marketing through email and social networking also lies in the aspect of choice. Social networking is all about choice: the choice to expand a network, the choice to say what you want to say, and the choice to be visible or invisible. Marketing through email, in a sense can be more intrusive, and once you sign-up for a email update, you will be sent updates till the day you unsubscribe; sometimes, you don’t even have to subscribe to get mail – a practice called spamming.

The way that email marketing and social networking should come together is by understanding and espousing trust. An email marketer can make social networking useful by creating microsites and fan pages, advertising them through the banner ads and click-of-mouse publicity of the website, and then getting more users to sign up as a natural progression. This is the age where the aggression of email marketers has to be toned down. This is the age when the email marketer will have to wait for the user to come to him or her. All promotional and user-acquisitions must now be based on this principle.

Retweets

These types of followers are people who have been referred to a single tweet of yours that they may have found as interesting. Whether they have a genuine interest in you for what you represent is undetermined since a single tweet can’t reflect that.

It is nice to get followers this way but as to whether there is a mutual interest in your basics interests or ideas can only be determined over time.

Having a large following on Twitter may be somewhat misleading once you realize the intent of some of those who follow you. This social platform is not immune to the shenanigans common to the rest of the internet. Online marketing companies are known to target anyone at social sites and this can result in spam. Even more of a concern are those whose intentions are more sinister in nature as they prey upon the innocent members of various social network sites. It is therefore wise to take notice of the types of followers you may have within your own social network of followers. Once they’ve been identified you have virtually neutralized them. At this point you can either block them or report them to site administrators.

LinkedIn will provide a list of members that have your target company in their profile. Two drop-down lists, in a small font, are shown at the top of the list of names. One of the drop-down lists is the “sort” function. This list can be sorted by “Relevance”, “Relationship”, “Relationship plus Recommendations”, and “Keyword”. Since the purpose of your search is to discover who you know with ties to XYZ Company, sort the list by “Relationship”.

The list will now start with your first level connections. Next, second level connections will be listed. Your first level connections are connected to people who are also in your first level. Think of them as “friends of friends” or “degrees of separation”. The list will continue in order of level of connection down to the fifth level.

It takes less than a minute to conduct and sort the search. Get in the driver’s seat and have an action plan by using the Linkedin employer search function.

Insiders who know you or someone you know will be developed. With a little charm and personality, you can reach out to these contacts and explore their experiences with the company you have chosen as your next employer. Give them a forum to share their thoughts and opinions. “Amy suggestions as to whom I should talk to about the XYZ Company?” is a question you should ask them. Be sure to ask people for their advice as they love to give it.

Using your LinkedIn network is a far more productive exercise than waiting for strangers to select your resume from hundreds of thousands of similar resumes floating around the internet. As you continue your job searching, be sure to use social networking by harnessing the power of LinkedIn. Remember, this is another valuable tool you can use effectively in your job search.
