Dear StartupNation : I’ve built a darned nice website for my new business that cost us a few bucks. But sometimes I still feel like we’re almost invisible. How can I pull more traffic and prospects? I’d like to see better results from our internet investment!

For a new business – heck, for any business – visibility is vital. If prospects don’t know who or where you are, you’re sunk. A well-done website offers great potential for boosting your business visibility. But with a zillion sites vying for clicks, it’s easy to get whooped in the website visibility derby.

Search engines are your secret weapon and a key to internet success. Every day, millions of people use search engines by typing in words or phrases to describe what they want. If your name pops up in the results list at Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Ask or any of dozens more like them, the benefits are golden.

The art of making that happen is called search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is all about increasing your online website visibility by creating just the right keywords to describe what you offer, organizing your site to capture search engine attention and building good links to your site from reputable sources. You can do much of this yourself, or seek help from one of the SEO services catering to small business.

Seven website visibility-boosting tips

  1. Use descriptive and informative text on each page of your website, choosing words that relate directly to your product, service or industry.
  2. Highlight and feature your most important content first, in a clear, uncluttered fashion.
  3. Ask other relevant sites to link to yours. One measure search engines now use to measure your site’s importance is the quality, and, to a lesser extent, volume of outside sites that refer to your own.
  4. Be sure to create distinct titles for each of the pages on your website, and use your keywords in the titles.
  5. Write descriptions that are clear, factual and free of excessive superlatives (best, cheapest, biggest). People prefer sites that are more factual and less “sales talk.”
  6. If your geographic location is relevant, use it in your site and make it part of your list of keywords.
  7. Don’t expect all search engines and online directories to find you. Many directories, such as the Yahoo! directory and the Open Directory project, offer paid submission options – take advantage of them.

Our Bottom Line

Having a website is great, but without traffic and website visibility, it’s not going to do a heck of a lot for your small business or startup – take some initial steps to boost your visibility with search engines, and watch your traffic and sales grow!

The gist of online marketing strategy for online business is your keyword selection. People turn to the Internet and type in a keyword or phrase. i.e.” how to invest wisely”, “how to cure acne” “how to lose weight” to search for the information they need.

Therefore using the right keywords or phrases on your website, blog, or in your articles allows you to achieve greater success than those who neglect the use of keywords. Good keyword placement and appropriate density are the main factors in deciding how your site scores with the major search engines.

This is also known as your organic traffic or search engine traffic and is accomplished by Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for your keywords.

If you do it correctly, chances of you getting a page one listing when people do their searches would be higher. This will bring you free organic traffic to your website or blog. On the other hand if you do it wrong your site can end up on page 400, where no one will stupid enough to scroll to.

So how many times should you use your keywords to please the search engines?

Although looking for the right keywords or keyword research can be time consuming and in boring the tools and the subsequent market research are very useful and can determine success or failure of your Internet marketing. Google, which dominates the search engine war, provides useful keyword research tools for free.

Many experts find that keyword should be between 2% and 5% of your article or web page. This some times could be a real pain when you are writing for your sales page.

A much easier way to get the frequency or density right for your website or articles without having to count them over and over is to have a simple “formula” such as
using keyword once near the front of your title, twice in the first paragraph, and then once in each of the following paragraphs and finally, twice in the last paragraph.

Some keyword research tools provide a list of say, 100 to 200 related keyword phrases while indicating the type of competition you have for each one.
This enables you to add in different keywords and see how they rank. The idea is to find keywords with high search results but low competition. This is also how you could find profitable products and niches.

Another way to help you to find keywords are I your blog and emails. One of the best sources of article topics that are usually search engine optimized are shown in the phrases that your customers use when they ask questions about your products or services and the posts they leave on your blog or chat forum. Examining these materials may also give you more targeted keywords and key phrases.

Finally, how do you determine whether the keywords you have selected could work effectively in your online business? One way is to test your keywords with a PPC (Pay Per Click) campaign. After you have done your initial keyword research, create a landing page with those keywords and set up a PPC campaign. You could then use an analytic tool to find out how many people land on your page and with what search terms. Using a PPC campaign prior to launching your complete SEO campaign could help you narrow down your keyword list so that you would be able use only the most effective ones for your online business.

SEO Keyword Density Formula

An integral part of any search engine optimization (SEO) campaign is the researching and choosing of keywords for your website. This is basically the words or terms that you are trying to champion in the search engine. Do you sell PEZ dispensers? Then you may want to use “PEZ”, “dispensers”, “flavored candy” or the more popular items, like “star wars PEZ”. Once you have these keywords chosen, you need to incorporate the keywords into your website’s content and tags so that it is considered relevant to the search engines when ranking your site. This includes all the copy throughout your website, as well as all the page titles, title tags and links. It’s not an easy process, but it is a necessary one for SEO.

When inserting your keywords throughout the on-page content, it is vital to understand the density at which keywords are optimized on a page. “Keyword density” is specifically referring to how often a keyword is used in your on-page copy. The search engines compute the keyword density percentage, and the more often they find a search term in your content, the more it will think that your page is relevant and should be ranked higher. However, there is a fine line between having an optimal keyword density and over-stuffing your content with keywords and terms.

Please Note: Just because you have the right amount of keyword density in your SEO campaign, doesn’t mean that you will automatically be ranked higher. Google’s new algorithm actually favors more related search terms than exclusively keyword density. Focus also on the quality of your content, rather than only focusing on your keyword density. If you do exceed the optimum keyword density, you can face an over-optimization penalty.

There is no “perfect” keyword density percentage in SEO, but Volacci strives to keep our density at or below 5 percent. The percentage of a page is relative to your content length, so it is recommended that you know the formula to calculate each page. The formula for keyword density is pretty simple.

1.) Count how many words you have on your page.
2.) Count how many times you have used your keyword
3.) Apply this formula:

Keyword Density = ([Keyword Count]*100)/(Total Word Count]

For example, let’s say that you have a 500 word article about PEZ dispensers, and you are optimizing for “PEZ”

- Total Word Count: 500
- PEZ keyword uses: 12
“PEZ” density = (12*100)/500

Keyword density for “PEZ” on the page is 2.4%

In SEO campaigns, having keyword optimization in your on-page content is very important to being relevant to the search engines. However, if you focus too much on keyword density, you can potentially lose focus on other important elements in the dynamic approach to optimizing your site. Use the keyword density formula to ensure that you are applying relevant uses of your keywords into quality content and links so that you are getting the most out of your research. If you abuse your keywords, the Google gods will get you, so don’t stuffers beware.

Google Algorithm – Secrets Exposed

Have you ever wonder how search engines rank websites? Do you know how they exactly determine which website to place on the first list of the page results? The truth is search engines tend to use a formula in determining which helpful websites they need to include on their results page. For instance, in Google, this search engine uses a formula known as the Google algorithm. Such algorithm cannot be controlled by anyone except for the authorized Google personnel. As a matter of fact, no one actually knows if how the algorithm works for Google.

If you are really concerned about the status of your website then, you have to be aware of the algorithm being used by one of the major search engines in existence nowadays which is the Google. In doing so, it would be a lot easier for you to ensure a good ranking on its search engine page results. There are actually a lot of secrets involved in the Google algorithm. Honestly speaking, most of these secrets have something to do with all the factors affecting the page ranking analysis being done by the Google. Fortunately, this article will reveal to you some of the hidden secrets regarding the algorithm of Google.

Being aware on the algorithm or formula being used by Google in ranking pages or websites is actually one of the most effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques which you should keep in mind. Here are some of the secrets or factors affecting the algorithm being used by Google in ranking websites or pages:

• Web Content – The contents or articles usually affects the ranking of the websites. Hence, you have to make sure to write superb and unique contents for your website in order to secure a good ranking in Google and in any other search engines. Your contents should also include relevant keywords for SEO purposes.

• Page Level – Your website should include plenty of features like the header tags, Meta tags, title tags, internal links, and page contents to maintain a good page level. The three tags namely, the header, Meta, and title tags should contain specific keywords to easily gain a great volume of traffic. In addition, the internal links refer to all the websites linked to your page. And the page contents simply refer to all the articles written on your website which must be in a non-code format.

• Inbound Link – Another factor which has something to do with the algorithm being used by the Google is the inbound link. This actually refers to the hyperlink from the other websites and is pointing to your site. Your inbound links should be of great quality, have different IPs, have relevance to your website, have user data, and have lower bounce rates.

Indeed, it is now safe to say that one of the best SEO techniques which you should take into consideration is to be knowledgeable about the Google algorithm. This is due to the fact that having vast knowledge about the said algorithm can help your website gain more

traffic each day as well as help you secure a high rank on Google. After all, some of the factors or secrets involved in the algorithm of Google are already mentioned above. You now only have to bear all those things into mind and into heart.

Using Google Search to Find Keywords

Finding the top keywords can often be a difficult task. For those of us new to internet marketing this task is almost impossible. But with the following example, it might make it a little clearer. In our example we might try the keyword phrase “lego building plans”, but in the search results for WordTracker it only has a search volume of 860 which is a bit lower then I would like to see, but when I check the competition for this term it is almost nonexistent.

We can do this by doing a quick check with the Google search engine; to give a rough idea of the competition. By typing the keyword into the search text box; in this case it is “lego building plans”. But when we type in our phrase we do something special with it, we surround it with two quotes so it would look like this “lego building plans”, this tells Google we only want to see results of webpage’s with just the phrase “lego building plans” in it. Then we hit the search button now.

When Google list out the results we see some number above on the right hand side of the screen, were it would say something like (Results 1 – 10 of about 1,480). Ideally I like to see a number less then 25,000, this means that the amount of competing websites for the keyword phrase “lego building plans” is nearly non existent. The results number is the number for the natural search results. These are the results we would be interested in if we were doing search engine optimization (SEO) for our WebPages.

When we look at the column of results on the right hand side, this gives us an approximate amount of the people advertising on Google AdWords for this keyword phrase and is referred to as the paid results. In this case there are only three or four advertisers. These are results that we might be interested in if were to make an AdWords campaign on Google. To be honest I didn’t just think of this phrase “lego building plans”, but found it through a lot of trial and error.

When trying to find different phrases, I looked in Google search for terms like “popular toys” or “hot toys” and got ideas from the results to try in WordTracker. By looking at the results in WordTracker for each term, I tried to look for the longer keyword phrases (longtail) variations that had a large search volume of around a 1000 or more a day, and were likely to have low competition.

This process can sometimes take hours to find top keywords. And this is just a preliminary screening for our keywords. I wanted to also mention that this method is often a very good way of finding your niche. Instead of finding your niche first, you sort of let your niche find you. This approach can often root out some really great niches. As you can see when we look for our top keywords first without any one niche in mind, it would be a lot easier to find some great keywords, because we wouldn’t have the restraints of being confined to a particular niche. You might be asking how you start a keyword search without even knowing what your niche is going to be.

One method is to do a search in Google by typing something into the search textbox, like “500 most search terms” and then check one of the pages with this information. Look through the list of terms on the page, for services or items that you could find an affiliate program for or something you could make a product for. Using the keyword terms that helped you find the niche, start looking for other keywords based on your new found niche.

You will see a lot of different ways that people use to find there niches and do there keyword research. This is just one method I use. But there are many variations on how you can do this, some more effective then others. So when doing searches it often pays to use your imagination and be a bit creative in how you find those top keywords. In the next article I will discuss how we can take a more in depth look at keywords, by cross-referencing them with different tools to see how effective they are. As well we will look at how we can find commercial intention and how important this is.

What is a Keywords Definition

One of the first things, anyone starting into internet marketing should know is what a keyword is (keywords definition), and how they are so important in the development of your online business. We will learn how keywords have an effect on nearly every aspect of internet marketing.

Weather your finding the right niche for your online presence to doing search engine optimization (SEO) on your webpage’s, right down to selecting your domain name. as far as I am concerned if you try to start an online business with out any understanding of what keywords are and how to find the right ones. You might as well just give up any thoughts of internet marketing and throw in the towel, because keyword knowledge is so crucial in nearly every aspect of marketing online.

Keywords definition is one concept you don’t want to skip without understanding it. So we will start off with what keywords are. A keyword is usually a word that best describes the product you’re selling. For example; if I were in the business of selling cars, one of my main keywords might be “cars”. The reason the keyword might be cars is that this word describes what I am selling. When you’re selecting a keyword for your product you have many considerations to think about. Here is a list of the specific criteria we are looking for when choosing keywords.

*A keyword needs to have lots of people using the keyword for there search term when doing a search on the net (search volume).
*The keyword would preferably have little competition from other marketers.
*The keyword must be a term that people use when they are looking with intention of purchasing something (commercial intention).

Now to elaborate on what I mean by search volume, this means that there will be a lot of people doing a search on the internet using the keyword as there search term. Ideally, we would prefer keywords with low competition that have good commercial intention, this is not always possible and not necessarily a bad thing, because if a keyword does have a lot of competition. It tells us there must be some money in that particular niche for that keyword term; the fact that there is some competition means we will have to fight a little harder to dominate for that particular niche.

Internet Marketing may employ one or more of the following methods – SEO, Email marketing, online marketing, Blog marketing, Article marketing, setting up a website, with websites being the most popular.

Internet Marketing as a search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search Engine optimization (SEO) is an effective way to increase volume and web traffic to a website from different search engines. In an effort to reach local and regional customers, U .S. companies spend more than $100 billion annually on advertising in local newspapers and magazines, local TV, and direct mail. But according to a November 2008 report by research firm Sterling Market Intelligence, 86 percent of Internet users now search for local products and services online, with 90 percent of those searchers purchasing those products or services offline.

As consumers shift from traditional media consumption to the online world, senior living providers will find significant opportunities to both measure and improve the efficiency of their local advertising.

If you were trying to reach local customers in 1969, your options were limited to only a handful of media formats. Today, consumers have access to more than 30 different types of media-from satellite TV to text messaging to YouTube to Facebook. With the multitude of ways consumers access information, advertisers must more carefully quantify marketing and advertising expenditures. Fortunately, because much of the new media is digital, it`s fairly easy to track and measure.

To achieve success in an online marketing program, you have to pay close attention to what is working and what isn`t. A simple five-step process can help ensure success and provide a solid picture of what you need to do to capture consumer attention and increase occupancy in your communities:

Step 1. Drive

The first step in a successful online marketing program is to drive prospects to your Web site. The most effective methods for making this happen are search engine marketing (SEM) and search engine optimization (SEO). When someone searches for “assisted living” in the city where you have a community, does your community appear in the search results? In a well-managed program, that community should appear on the first page of search results, making it easy for consumers to find and get directly to your Web page:

Sponsored listings (pay per click, or PC ). These are usually the top three listings along with the listing down the right-hand side of the search results page. These ads are how Google grosses more than $5 billion a quarter in revenue.
Maps. This is, as it sounds, the map with flags indicating local businesses and their locations in Google results. It is important that your community is listed within the top 10 map results.
Organic (free listings). These are the results that appear below maps and can include thousands of results. In order to achieve success, you should be on the first page of results. Data shows that 60 percent of searchers still consistently click in the organic search results.

Step 2. Engage

Once you`ve attracted prospects to your site, you must then engage them to take action and move the transaction forward offline. Because the Internet is becoming the de facto first source of reference for many consumers, a professionally designed site with pertinent information and appealing photos of your community is paramount. Once you have their attention, you have to make it easy for them to take the next step. If your goal is to get them to pick up the phone and call you, your site needs to push them to do so with a large, prominent phone number. If you want them to schedule a tour of your community, the “schedule a tour” option should be front and center. Whatever step you want consumers to take, an appropriate call to action is incredibly important.

Step 3. Track

Trackability is where Internet marketing separates itself from traditional media by providing the data needed to form an accurate analysis of your return on investment. To leverage these benefits, your site needs to be designed and developed to track the origin of each of your visitors and leads, as well as each of your calls to action. The easiest way to do this is using unique call-tracking numbers so you know exactly the ad source of each call. If you are also capturing Web forms (such as for scheduling a tour), the forms must be tagged to easily recognize the visitor`s origin.

Step 4. Measure

Once you are tracking the source of your leads, it becomes possible to measure which leads are increasing occupancy. This is beneficial for many reasons, not the least of which is money savings. Simply put, without measurement, you`ll waste money. Tracking move-ins back to where they originate enables you to measure the cost-per-customer acquisition (CPA) for each of your marketing and advertising initiatives. From there, it becomes a simple math problem to measure the cost-per-resident rate and the source(s) of the highest quality leads (and subsequent residents). This tells you exactly what is working and what isn`t.

Step 5. Optimize

The final step is probably the most simple, given the correct information. Once you have tracked, measured, and ranked your advertising and marketing efforts, push your budgets toward the efforts that will give you the best bang for the buck. With many senior living providers looking to add accountability to their marketing programs, it is increasingly important to optimize budgets. By knowing exactly which of your marketing sources is working the best, you can easily optimize and focus those waning dollars and efforts.

The traditional model for developing local, qualified leads has worked to date. But with prospects doing their research online 16 percent more than they did just two years ago, there is an undeniable shift from traditional media to online. Being aware of this shift allows savvy senior living providers to leap ahead of the competition by efficiently and cost-effectively measuring and managing local advertising efforts.
