Click Fraud

Click Fraud

The increasing popularity of the pay per click advertising model has led to a new challenge: click fraud. Click fraud is basically a way to make money by causing others to lose money. Click fraud, in essence, is any kind of fraud involving repeatedly clicking on advertising with a malicious intention. There are different types of click fraud, but this problem has driven up advertising costs and generally cost merchants hundreds, thousands, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars more than they should be paying in click costs.

One example of click fraud is a way to cheat the competition. In this scheme, a company or individual will pay groups of people, usually foreigners, to click on certain ads all day for a set amount of money. This drives up advertising costs for the company whose ad is being clicked, thus harming their bottom line. None of the parties who are committing the click fraud intend to buy the products sold on the website whose ad they are clicking.

Another example of click fraud is dummy sites created for the sole purpose of creating phony clicks. By creating a site that posts pay per click advertising from publishers like Google’s AdWords, creators of these dummy sites hope to drive up profits by increasing the number of clicks that appear on their sites. One way to do this is to click these links themselves, though most publishers have provisions in place to hopefully eliminate this kind of fraud. Another way would be to pay someone else, preferably someone overseas, to do the clicking.

There is simply not enough information to determine how common or how costly click fraud is because hard numbers are hard to obtain. Plus, determining which clicks are frauds and which are real can be a real problem for the publishers of advertising. Click fraud may constitute up to 20% of the PPC market, which drives up costs for advertisers. The problem is that PPC advertising works too well for some companies to give up on PPC as part of their marketing plan. While Google and Yahoo! both claim on to be vigilant in their search for click fraud, plenty of instances go unnoticed and slip through the cracks.

The potential for PPC fraud shouldn’t be a deal breaker for most advertisers. The best way to keep from falling prey to PPC fraud is to be aware of the issue and exercise caution and vigilance. The following guidelines will help prevent PPC fraud from unnecessarily draining an advertising budget.

  • Use only search engine PPC providers. Search engine providers are particularly effective at identifying fraudulent activity, especially since these sites go to great lengths to monitor for and prevent click fraud.
  • Vigilance in tracking results can also help identify problems. Watch the numbers closely, especially at the beginning of the campaign, and notify the PPC provider immediately if the ad begins receiving an unusually high number of clicks – especially clicks that do not lead to a sale.
  • Set a daily, weekly, or monthly ad budget with the PPC provider. When the budget is exhausted for that time period, the ad should be removed. This will prevent a website’s entire operating budget from being drained by click fraud.

Aside from click fraud, other challenges to PPC advertising strategies include the cost and longevity of a PPC campaign. Some keywords are extremely popular and thus competitive. Competitive keywords tend to cost more per click and can quickly drive up advertising costs. Longevity is another issue. Unlike SEO techniques, which will improve a site’s volume of traffic for years, a PPC campaign is only a viable source of traffic as long as the site continues to pay for the campaign. When a website decides to end a PPC campaign, the traffic from the campaign will stop.

What is Viral Marketing?

When someone asks that question I assume I must start at the beginning. The word “viral” comes from virus. Most of us know what that is. OK… so Dictionary.com defines viral as: of, pertaining to, or caused by a virus.

So, now that you know what viral is, let’s apply it to marketing. Specifically Internet Marketing. For any marketing to be considered viral, it must be something that is self-propagating. It must be something that the marketer starts and places into action and it continues without further action by the marketer. In other words the marketer is able to start it and then forget about it. It grows and finds its way to more and more prospects without any further action by the marketer. Viral marketing then, is any marketing plan or system that encourages or compels individuals to pass on a marketing message to others.

How does that happen? The theory is that if you have a item of value, like an eBook and you allow others to reproduce it and distribute it, either free or for a small fee, people will do just that. Pass it on that is. Of course the key here is that it must be perceived to have value or it won’t get passed on. Assuming there is perceived value it’s pretty easy to see what can happen in a short period of time. Let’s say you wrote an eBook with value to a wide audience and allowed free distribution. Let’s assume that you distributed only three copies yourself, but each person you gave it to gave it to another three people and everyone who received it did the same thing. When 10 levels have been reached almost 30,000 have seen your eBook. Remember, you only personally distributed three! What would be the result if you distributed 1,000 yourself? You can do the math, but I think you get the point. Again, you need to have something that people will pass on and make it very easy for them to do so or it won’t go viral.

One of the great early examples of viral marketing was, and probably still is, Hotmail. Hotmail’s method of gaining new subscribers was by including a brief

There are several vehicles that can be used as viral marketing products. Examples are: E-Books, E-mail, Newsletters, Blogs, Chat-Rooms, Video Clips and Flash Games. My personal preference happens to be eBooks. I like eBooks for viral marketing because once you have spent the time developing them you are pretty much done. If you can create an eBook that has real value to a wide base of potential readers you should have a successful viral marketing campaign. Again, the secret here is IT MUST HAVE VALUE and it must cause the reader to WANT TO SEND IT TO OTHERS. Miss either one of these and your viral marketing campaign will most likely fail.

Pick a vehicle from the above list, or create your own vehicle and get it rolling. Use your imagination and be creative. Do something a little different and you can be a success.

I actually downloaded One Week Marketing on the very first day of release. I was so desperate to read it that I printed off every single sheet (all 100+!) and took them along to the hairdressers with me that morning. I got some funny looks as I sat there having highlights, whilst reading through a wad of photocopies, which I hadn’t even had time to bind! However, it was pretty unusual for me to have a couple of hours to simply “read” and read I did!

My experiences since have lead me to do a One Week Marketing Plan review.

It felt so exciting on that morning, you know that feeling of anticipation you used to get at Christmas? Well, I guess it was a bit like that. I had been using Squidoo for a few weeks as part of my efforts to make money online. My journey had began on the 5th June 2008, the very day that I became a member of the wealthy Affiliate community. I knew absolutely nothing about making money online-even less about using my computer for anything other than emailing and surfing the web for clothes.

The resources in Wealthy Affiliate really are astounding-there is no other word for it really. However, for a newcomer like me, there was almost too much information. I could tell that there was absolutely everything I needed there, but it was where to start which was the problem. However, I did start, and by mid July, I had already made a few dollars online.

I had come across Jen Leadbetter, the author of One Week Marketing when looking for information about Squidoo, (a great resource for making free webpages) and I later “bumped into her” when she joined Wealthy Affiliate in July. I had found her information so incredibly helpful that when I discovered she was making One Week Marketing, it was a no-brainer-I simply had to get my hands on it as soon as possible. (Hence why I had it in my hands on the day of release!)

My One Week Marketing Review concentrates on how it all worked for me.

Before getting hold of OWM, my attempts with Squidoo can only be described as haphazard. I had no plan as such. I found it very difficult to organize my evenings, when I did most of my marketing. I would be jumping from one activity to another, not really knowing what to do-in fact there lies one of the problems with internet marketing.

There are simply so many ways of making money online that it is very easy to move from one thing to another without really giving anything a proper chance of working.

One Week Marketing revolves around using tried and tested free ways to make money online. It teaches you how to use Squidoo effectively, in a way that monetizes it. The reason it worked for me so well is because it uses easy to follow systems and steps which is precisely what I needed at that point in my internet marketing career. I also found that it built up my confidence to a level where I knew what the possibilities were outside of Squidoo-I can only liken it to being a baby bird, learning how to fly. One day, you suddenly realize that you can do it, and off you go. For me, this meant learning how to build my own simple website and building up Pay Per Click campaigns.

Ironically, as I am sat here typing, I have a little “icon” or widget in the right hand corner of my PC. (I’m not even sure what the correct term is!). When I make a Clickbank sale, the amount pops up in the corner. As I’ve written this article, two sales had popped up, totalling just over $62-both from Squidoo pages, both done following the One Week Marketing Plan.

If you decide to click on my link at the bottom of the page, you will be taken to one of the first Squidoo pages I made after I got hold of One Week Marketing. I have left it more or less intact, other than amending it to say that it has actually worked for me.

Obviously, reading through this OWM review may be a helpful way for you to decide if this product might be for you. However, a better way is to look inside it for yourself.

You can get a free “sneak-peek” of the first 18 pages of the One Week Marketing Guide and this will give you a good idea of the quality of the rest of the guide. For further information and to read more about my own experiences of using the guide, please see my One Week Marketing Plan Review.

If you are trying to make money online and are considering PotPieGirl’s product, you may be wondering “How do you make money online with one week marketing?”. Indeed, most people are quite rightly suspicious of products which claim to help you to make a living online, as most of the sellers are faceless individuals and there is little proof of whether what they are selling actually works!

The difference with this product is that Jennifer Leadbetter, the writer of the One Week Marketing Plan is very much a real person. She has an online presence in various internet marketing forums and has provided one-to-one help to many, many individuals (myself included). Her name has become trusted in a minefield of what can be, quite frankly, dishonorable individuals who are simply out to make a fast buck!

To make money with One Week Marketing, you will be taught exactly how to use free money-making methods, so there is absolutely no need whatsoever to spend another dime to get things up and running. Integral to the One Week Marketing Plan is the use of Squidoo-a free site which enables you to make your own very simple web pages. It really is so easy that anyone can do it. When you have decided which product you would like to promote, you can get hold of your own unique “affiliate link” and paste this onto your page. You will then write about the product and publish your page. Providing your page is of interest, you will hopefully get people to “click” onto it and maybe buy your product.

This is a very simplistic view and there are various steps you need to take to promote you page and ensure that it can be seen by people who are surfing the internet looking for information on the topic you have written about.

If you have been wondering “how do you make money online with One Week Marketing?” then why not look inside for more information! You can get a free “sneak-peek” of the first 18 pages of the One Week Marketing Guide and this will give you a good idea of the quality of the rest of the guide. For further information and to read more about my own experiences of using OWM, please visit “Does One Week Marketing Work?”.
