I agree with you that choosing the keywords you should optimise is an important choice I am just not convinced that you will get the answers you want by looking at your competitors. All too often I see companies in an industry where everyone is copying each other in a lemming like approach to marketing with the result that everyone is hurling themselves off a cliff.
A better way to choose keywords is to look at your copy that you want to use and really look at your copy. Is it concise, does it use a term that is specific to your industry or is it so generic that it could just as easily refer to heavy plant machinery as it could to gardening supplies (example). Check out the predicted search traffic using Google’s free Keyword tool and see what results are currently coming up. Once you have these keywords and phrases then it is a case of making sure that you are including them in the title and as close to the top of your first sentence as possible. None of this is difficult but it does take a little time and effort. You may even want to rewrite your copy as a result of this kind of exercise. Its about having everything fitting together as part of an overall digital marketing strategy so that you get the right kind of traffic landing on your site in order to start to build a relationship with them through the sales process.
